More Than a Program: The 21st Century After School Experience
In the heart of our community, a vibrant after-school program is transforming the hours between the final school bell and dinner into a time of growth, exploration, and fun. The 21st Century After School Program is a dynamic and multifaceted initiative designed to support students academically, physically, and creatively.
A World of Opportunities
From the moment students arrive, they’re greeted with a diverse range of activities that go beyond the typical classroom setting. Our program offers something for every interest.
For the adventurous and outdoorsy, there's Ski 4 Life, an exhilarating trip to Big Rock Mountain in Mars Hill, and seasonal field trips that take students to Lamoine Beach in the summer and Katahdin Woods and Waters in the fall and winter. Students can get moving with a variety of physical activities, including weight lifting, bike riding, kickball, snowshoeing, basketball, dodgeball, and soccer.
Creative minds can dive into sewing, cooking, crafts, and the annual drama program, where students take the stage to perform a different play each year. Budding engineers and scientists can explore with Snap Circuits, Legos, and engaging STEAM lessons, or test their ingenuity at the Pirate Boat Launch.
Beyond the exciting activities, our program is committed to a holistic approach to student well-being. We provide students with support for homework and a chance to practice skills learned during the school day. We also promote healthy choices and nutrition, ensuring that students receive a healthy snack to fuel their bodies and minds.
Strong Community, Stronger Students
The success of the 21st Century After School Program is built on strong partnerships with local organizations and businesses. We work closely with the Katahdin Learning Project, AMHC, SNAP Ed, Frank Cox, Darlings Ice Cream Truck, the Maine Science Museum, and Chewonki to bring unique and enriching experiences to our students. Our staff, consisting of familiar faces—teachers and educational technicians from the regular school day—creates a supportive and consistent environment where students feel comfortable and engaged.
Engaging Families and Fostering Connection
We believe that strong student success is a team effort. The program provides numerous opportunities for parent engagement and education, including the annual Health Fair in a Bag, Parent Open House, and the elementary sliding party. We also host events to support students as they transition, such as the 8th Grade Step Up Night and Financial Aid Nights for college-bound students. Informational flyers and handouts on topics like Tick Safety and Diabetes ensure families have access to valuable health information.
One of our most popular family events is our annual Trunk or Treat. The Friday night before Halloween, parents, teachers, and older students from organizations like NHS decorate their car trunks and provide a safe space for students to trick-or-treat. With 18 to 22 decorated trunks and up to 200 attendees, the event creates a secure and memorable experience for everyone. We also provide a Halloween safety lesson to remind families how to be safe while trick-or-treating in town.
This year, the program will begin on September 8th for grades 6-12 and on September 22nd for elementary students. Hours are Monday through Thursday, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. We are excited for another year of fun, learning, and growth. We can’t wait to see you there!
