Cami Shields Receives 2024 MPA Principal’s Award

Jonathan Porter, Principal at Southern Aroostook Community High School is pleased to announce that Cami Shields of Smyrna Mills, Maine, a senior at Southern Aroostook Community High School, has been selected to receive the 2024 Principal’s Award.  The award sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.

“Throughout her years here at Southern Aroostook, Cami has distinguished herself in the classroom and as a leader in the school and the community.”  Principal Porter noted in making the award.  “Cami has been very active in many school and community related activities that have accentuated her outstanding character and commitment to excellence. “She is very deserving of this recognition.”

Cami is an active member of the National Honor Society.  Cami also currently serves as Class President of the Class of 2024.  Cami is a member of TRIO, has served on the Prom Committee, and is a member of the So. Aroostook Scholarship Fund.  Cami attended the HOBY Youth Leadership Conference, was selected to represent So. Aroostook High School at Dirigo State, was selected as a Heisman High School Scholarship Award Winner, and will graduate with honors in the top 5% of her class.     

Cami is active in the community through volunteer projects such as volunteering at the So. Aroostook Food Pantry, officiating youth basketball games, volunteering at children’s church and the nursery at Bethel Pentecostal Church in Oakfield, volunteering at SACS Hoop Camp, and has received Special Olympics Mentor Training.   Cami has participated in Varsity Soccer, earning All-Aroostook Honors twice. She has played Varsity Basketball earning All-Aroostook Honors three times, All-Tournament Honors twice, MABC & Aroostook Senior All-Star Honors, and scored over 1,000 career points.  Cami also has played Varsity Softball earning All-Aroostook Honors.  Cami also works part-time at Madigan Estates in Houlton.    

Cami has been accepted at Husson University in the Fall of 2024 to pursue a degree in Nursing. Cami is the daughter of Jordan & Olivia Shields of Smyrna Mills.  

Cami and other award school winners are invited to an Honors Luncheon and will be presented an individual plaque.  Cami will also have the opportunity to be awarded one of ten $1,000 scholarships in the name of Horace O. McGowan, Richard W. Tyler, and Richard A. Durost.  Mr. McGowan, Mr. Tyler, and Mr. Durost were former Maine Principals and MPA Executive Directors. 

The Principal's Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine's school administrators.
